KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A retired Kalamazoo County sheriff’s sergeant pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Monday after being indicted on felony weapons charges last year.
Matthew Emmert, 54, pleaded to one count of willful failure to supply information during a hearing, according to officials at the office of U.S. District Magistrate Judge Hugh Brenneman Jr.
He faces a maximum of one year in prison and a fine up to $25,000 when he is sentenced April 7 in Grand Rapids.
Emmert was originally indicted in July 2013 on felony weapons charges for possession of an unregistered machine gun and possession of a machine gun. He faced up to 10 years for those charges.
According to Judge Brenneman’s office, sheriff’s office employees found the machine gun while cleaning out his locker following his retirement in December 2012.
Emmert retired after allegations that he used a camera to record a deputy who was using his office to pump breast milk for her infant. After an investigation by the sheriff’s department, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office requested felony charges be filed against him in that case.
However, because Emmert was a deputy, the case was forwarded to the Michigan Attorney General, who declined to authorize charges. The deputy who was recorded received a $200,000 out-of-court settlement from the county, according to MLive.
