AMBER TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A former student of 68-year-old William Marble said that his former educator was well liked at Mason County Eastern Schools. Marble was shot and killed by a state trooper on Tuesday night at a home on the 1200 block of Dennis Rd. in Amber Township.

Kevin Vansickle said that Marble was his middle school social studies teacher.

“He was a really nice teacher as far as I knew him. I had him for two years I think it was, and never had a problem with him. He always seemed happy and everything was fine,” said Vansickle.

Vansickle lives just one house down from Marble’s home. He said that he didn’t hear the gunshot, but could see the commotion.

“I walked over to the bathroom window and looked out the bathroom window and said ‘Oh my God,'” he said.

Vansickle’s wife Tammy said that she first noticed the police lights when she got up to use the restroom.

“I got up at like three o’clock in the morning to go to the bathroom and seen the flashing lights and looked out the window and was like, ‘What is going on?’ So, I went downstairs and woke my husband up and said you need to see this,” she said.

Mason County Eastern Schools Superintendent Paul Shoup said that he is also a former student of Marble’s.

“I’ve known Mr. Marble a number of years. He actually was a teacher of mine when I attended school here. Then when I came back and started teaching here, we were colleagues for about 10 years,” Shoup said.

Kevin and Tammy Vansickle said that as a neighbor, Marble kept to himself.
