GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Drivers on westbound I-96 found themselves routed off the expressway at Cascade Road and forced to take the East Beltline.

The cause was located a few hundred yards east of the East Beltline: a multi-car crash that blocked all four lanes. First responders had to extricate one driver.

Traffic was at a standstill back to 28th Street for most of the morning after the crash took place around 6:50 a.m. Removal of all the vehicles involved took until 9 a.m.

The morning commute was peppered with slide-offs, crashes, and freeway slowdowns. Eastbound I-196 was stopped for a time after a 7 a.m. crash at the Diamond Avenue overpass. That traffic jam affected the ramp from northbound US-131 to eastbound I-196.

Mishaps continued after the morning commute.

Rob Westaby, why do you call us first responders? We are the first and last and only responders. Just say the Grand Rapids Fire Department next time. We do not appreciate the term first responders. There are no other responders showing up. We do it all. We respond, cut them out of the car, and give them emergency care, and get them to the hospital. The emergency professionals would be a better fit. Thank you
