ROCKFORD, Mich. – Renovations are underway to build an Uccello’s Ristorante, Pizzeria & Sports Lounge in Rockford, with plans to open this summer. However, the future Uccello’s building, located at 19 North Main Street, was posted as “condemned as dangerous and unsafe” on January 22.

Rockford Building official and Zoning Administrator Kirk Scharphorn says the water froze in both 19 North Main Street and the town house upstairs, 21 North Main Street, but says this is a minor, temporary issue.

“The water froze so the fire suppression doesn’t work and the tenant upstairs has no water. We just can’t let them live there without the fire suppression line or domestic water; they have neither. As soon as those things are fixed the order will be lifted. I did not stop construction on Uccello’s on the first floor, that’s needs to be finished and get heat in there so the water lines won’t freeze,” explains Scharphorn.

Scharphorn says they are working on it, adding that the City of Rockford is being cautious and acting on the safe-side, to ensure that the town house tenants are safe and have good living conditions.

This future Uccello’s will be at the former Sam’s Joint Restaurant in Rockford that shut down after 30 years, and then was bought by Uccello’s last year.
