020114snowWEST MICHIGAN — Snow falling this morning has begun to intensify as a Winter Storm moves into the Great Lakes. Snow was heaviest early in the morning north of I-96 but has since started to taper to a more light and moderate snow as an intense snow band develops in the south.

Snow fall rates of more than an inch an hour have been reported along the Indiana border where an intense snow band has set-up. Heavy snow has caused problems with travel around Chicago as well. Both Chicago airports are involved in a ground delay program and some airlines have cancelled flights effecting some in Grand Rapids.

Heavy, wet, dense snow will continue through the afternoon and evening tonight as this Winter Storm moves through the Great Lakes. As we head into the afternoon temperatures along the Indiana/Ohio border will warm close to freezing which will allow for wet snow to mix with light rain. This area of rain/snow mix in south-central Michigan will drop snow totals but still create a sloppy mess on roads and surfaces.

Heaviest snow will fall this afternoon along I-94 and north to I-96 where new snow accumulations of  to 6 inches will be possible. Some areas could see locally heavier amounts of 6 inches or more especially in Berrien County. Snow will start to taper off as we head into the late evening hours as the Winter Storm moves off to the East Coast.

High pressure moves in Sunday bringing chances for some sunshine and quiet weather as we head into the next work week. Sunshine and quiet weather will not last long as we will be watching another chance for some significant snow by mid-week
