Alleged FSU Shooter Arraigned on 17 Charges

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — DeCory Downing was arraigned Monday on more than a dozen charges related to the early Saturday shooting in off-campus student housing complex near Ferris State University.

Downing, 20, was charged with a total of 17 counts related to the incident, including attempted murder, assault with intent to murder, assault with great bodily harm less than murder and several weapons charges.

Another person was charged Monday related to the weekend shooting incident.  Big Rapids District Court Officials say Shaionna Brown, 19, was charged with being an accessory to a felony after the fact and two weapons charges.

Ferris State University Department of Public Safety Director Bruce Borkovich says investigators believe this Venlo Place shooting is an isolated incident, saying they do not believe Downing knew the victim, a male FSU student.

Officials say the FSU student who was shot is expected to recover; he has since been treated and released from a Grand Rapids hospital. Borkovich says preliminary investigation shows Downing fired one shot; the bullet

hit the student’s arm, then traveled and hit his stomach. As of now, officials are not releasing the identity of the victim.

Downing has a criminal history with the Macomb County Sheriff Department. Criminal records show he was charged with one misdemeanor count of disturbing the peace in September 2010, and one misdemeanor count of assault in January 2012.
