KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich (February 14, 2014) – A Kalamazoo man is behind bars after police say he held his girlfriend against her will, assaulting and torturing her while 3 children were inside their apartment.

It happened at an apartment in the 1900 block of Colgrove Avenue.  Officers with the Kalamazoo Township Police Department were called there on Valentine’s Day on a report of a woman being assaulted.

Officers made contact with a 33-year-old Kalamazoo man at the apartment, who refused to allow officers inside, threatening to shoot them if they came into his apartment.

Investigators say fearing for the woman’s safety, officers forced their way into the home and took the 33-year-old man into custody without incident.

Officers made contact with a woman who “had obviously been assaulted” according to a press release.  The woman told officers she’s been continuously tortured by her live-in boyfriend since approximately 9:00 a.m. Thursday.

The victim refused treatment for her injuries, which included numerous bruises, lacerations and puncture wounds.

She’d been living with the 33-year-old for approximately 18 months.

Investigators say three children were also inside the home during the incident, a 6-month-old that belongs to the couple, and an 8-year-old and 4-year-old who belong to the suspect from a previous relationship.  Child Protective Services was called to assist in the investigation.

The 33-year-old Kalamazoo man was transported to the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting charges which will be determined by the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office.
