thundersnowKALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. – Residents in southwest Michigan witnessed a unique weather phenomenon Thursday morning, thundersnow.

As a warm front moved into Michigan Thursday morning, it brought a little of everything–  freezing rain, rain and heavy snow.  As the system crossed the Michigan-Indiana line the front forced the warmer air in the atmosphere to move upward and sped up the precipitation being produced.  That is when thundersnow develops.

There were reports of thundersnow along the I-94 corridor Thursday morning from extreme southwest Michigan to the Jackson area.  One viewer captured the sounds of thundersnow on camera.

We are posting live updates on the weather situation in the FOX 17 Live Weather Blog.

Midday Thursday there was a break in the weather action, but a second round is making its way in from the southwest.  Meantime, some West Michigan schools plan to release students early.  Wayland Public Schools in Allegan County will release students 15 minutes early Friday. Listen to the thundersnow below.  You can hear it at 4:46.
