1403291GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 24, 2014) — A California inmate was transported back to Kent County to face a homicide charge in the death of 47-year-old Marie Nettles.

Demarco Carnegie, 28, was charged Monday with homicide and armed robbery, according to Kent County Prosecutor Bill Forsyth.  Carnegie is also serving an 11-year sentence in Kern County, Calif. for first-degree robbery.

According to Forsyth, Carnegie’s DNA was found on Nettles’ body.  Autopsy results show that Nettles was strangled and then dragged to the Plaster Creek Trail, where she was found Aug. 8.

Carnegie was arrested in California six days later for a motel robbery.  Forsyth said hat police connected the car he was driving to a Grand Rapids robbery that happened the day Nettles’ body was found.

Police in Kern County found a note in the car similar to one that he allegedly passed to a clerk during that Aug. 8 robbery at the Admiral Gas Station, 4219 Kalamazoo Ave. SE.

A probable cause hearing in Carnegie’s case is scheduled March 10.
