MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. – Two dogs were found dumped along the road near McMillan Elementary School in Fruitland Township Sunday night.

The Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident after a husband and wife discovered the dogs while they were out for a walk.

“Hopefully it’s not dog fighting,” Deputy Tiffany Peterson with the sheriff department’s animal control division said. “Looks like there’s some bite marks and teeth wounds to their jowl area, their jaws…everything.”

Peterson said the dogs appear to be two boxers and that they’re about 2 years old. She said while the injuries don’t indicate any dog fighting took place, she can’t be sure.

“There wasn’t really a whole lot of other extensive wounds to the body,” she said.

Joe and Gail Weaver are the couple who found the dogs.

“I wish they would’ve been breathing so we could’ve picked them up and took them to our place,” Gail said.

The couple returned later Sunday night with a blanket to cover the animals  up.

“I didn’t want the kids to come Monday morning and see dead animals on the way to school,” Joe said.

On Monday, Joe and Gail were the first ones back to the scene. They came with a shovel, ready to take the dogs home with them, before animal control arrived.

“I wanted to come and get them and bury them,” Gail said. “Say ‘We’re sorry this happened to you.'”

A veterinarian who works with the sheriff’s department is conducting an autopsy on the dogs.

“I’d like to be alone with whoever did this for ten minutes…that’s the rage inside of me. [It] takes you to a place you don’t even want to go,” Joe said.

Joe served in the Air Force and left an American flag with the dogs.
