BgTY5UDCUAAMGVSGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 25, 2014) — The woman who claimed she found an injured puppy in a garbage can has admitted to making the story up.

McKenzie Coleman, 18, claimed to find an eight-week-old Chihuahua-mix that was tossed into a garbage can and abandoned.

Coleman said she heard the puppy crying in the trash can near her home.  She said she cared for the puppy and named it “Foxy” until contacting Kent County Animal Control.

Now that story is changing.  According to police, Coleman admitted to lying about the dog’s circumstances.

After the story gained media attention in West Michigan and a huge wave of people offered to adopt her, police received several tips that Coleman was lying.

Foxy had one eye removed during surgery shortly after she was brought to the animal shelter.

Coleman told police she didn’t want to be perceived as a “bad person” for dropping off an injured dog at the animal shelter and that her story later “spiraled out of control.”

Police say they don’t know the true story behind Foxy and add that this is not a criminal case.
