KENT COUNTY, Mich (February 27, 2014) – A Kent County man is now facing federal weapons charges after investigators found a stolen Michigan State Police rifle in his possession.
33-year-old Todd Simmons was arrested after the Kent Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (KANET) executed a search warrant at his Grand Rapids home on Valentine’s Day.
Federal court documents say two weapons were found during the search:
- Colt 5.56 X 45mm, M16 A2, automatic rifle
- Taurus .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol
The rifle was found in a black case in the master bedroom of the home in the 400 block of Benson NE in Grand Rapids.
Investigators ran the serial number on the weapon, which was reported stolen by a Michigan State Police Trooper in Grandville in August of 2012. At the time, investigators say someone broke into the Trooper’s personal vehicle at the Holiday Inn Express, stealing the Trooper’s badge, assault rifle and other personal belongings. The Trooper was off-duty when the theft took place.
During interviews, Simmons told investigators he bought the rifle about a year ago for $1,000, but court records didn’t specify who it was from.
Simmons criminal record includes felony convictions for Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Assault with Intent to Murder and Home Invasion.
