MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich (February 28, 2014) – A convicted killer already serving a life sentence for murder will now spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole after pleading no contest to killing his cellmate in Muskegon.

Robert Allen Hall plead no contest to first-degree murder for the death of Donald Winnie, his cellmate at Muskegon’s Earnest C. Brooks Correctional Facility in October of last year.

Prosecutors say Hall admitted he planned an attack against Winnie while he was sleeping, putting a chunk of asphalt in a pillowcase, hitting Winnie in the head at least six times.  Prosecutors also say Hall stabbed Winnie in the head with an eight-inch-long round steel weapon sharpened at the end.

Winnie was hospitalized after the attack, and was on life support for five days before he died.

During testimony, Prosecutors say Hall admitted to the attack, saying he had a history of fights with Winnie, both physical and verbal.

Winnie was a convicted murderer serving a life sentence for first-degree murder for a killing in Midland County in 1987.

Hall was also already serving a life sentence, but with the possibility of parole for a second-degree murder conviction for a stabbing death in Kent County in 2007.  He’ll now serve life without parole with this latest plea.

Hall is now lodged at the Ionia Correctional Facility as a maximum-security prisoner.
