GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb 28, 2014) — As we “March” into a new month Saturday, here is a look at the normal weather and the records that exist, as well as the length of daylight.

TEMPERATURES: The normal high in March rises from 38 degrees on the 1st to 51 degrees by the 31st.  Normal lows rise from 23 to 32. The record high for March was set just two years ago in 2012, when the high was 87 on the 21st.  The record low is 13 below set on the 8th in 1943.

PRECIPITATION: There is normally 2.37 inches of precipitation in March. There has been as much as 5.77 inches in 1948 and as little as 0.08 of an inch in 1910.

SNOWFALL:  On average, the snowfall in March is 8.3 inches.  The snowiest March was in 1965, when Grand Rapids received 36.0 inches for the month.  The maximum snow depth was 15 inches set on three dates in 2007, but that record will be broken as of Midnight Saturday.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT: Here is a look at the sunrise and sunset times, as well as the length of daylight:

  • March 1:  The sunrise is at 7:19AM, and the sunset is at 6:32PM.  Times are Eastern Standard. The length of daylight is 11 hours and 13 minutes.
  • March 31:  The sunrise is at 7:26AM, and the sunset is at 8:08PM. Times are Eastern Daylight. The length of daylight is 12 hours and 42 minutes.

This means the length of daylight increases by one hour and 29 minutes in March.
