GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Feb. 28, 2014) — Officials with the Grand Rapids Public Schools confirmed Friday morning that an online announcement that the district was closed was the result of a web site glitch and not the work of hacking.

“At least one media outlet picked that up and reported it,” said the district’s Facebook post. FOX 17 did not announce the erroneous closure.

At first, the district’s Facebook page said hackers were responsible for the error, but officials said they have been experiencing an online glitch, and the web site displayed the message in error. “A previous school closing message was accidentally selected for ‘reoccurence’ which is an option under the website content management system, said John Helmholt, district communications director.
