WEST MICHIGAN (March 8, 2014) — Yes…the pun in the headline was intended! Saturday night/Sunday morning we Spring the clocks forward one hour as we return to Daylight Saving Time. In short, we’ll lose an hour sleep, but we’ll gain another hour of daylight before the sun sets from now on.

Sunrise time on Saturday occurred at 7:06 AM. Sunset time occurred at 6:40 PM. After moving the clocks ahead one hour, Sunday’s sunrise time is 8:05 AM and the sunset time occurs at 7:41 PM. If you fail to move the clocks ahead one hour, you’ll be a little late for everything Sunday morning!

There are a handful of states and areas that do not observe Daylight Saving Time in the United States. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Arizona do NOT observe the time change. If you’d like to know why Arizona doesn’t, click here to find out!

Make sure to use this time to change the batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors too. I had a conversation with a Grand Rapids firefighter at the Home and Garden Show on Friday. In fact, they had a safety display set up where they were answering questions. If your detectors are 10 years old or older, they need to be thrown away and replaced. The sensitivity lacks in these devices after time passes and they no longer are dependable, even if you press the test button and they emit the audible alarm. Mine are hard-wired with electricity, but are as old as our house…so I’ll be replacing them soon!

This year’s time change comes with slightly milder weather than we’ve experienced this winter. In addition to seeing some sunshine, we’ll see temperatures at/above freezing on Sunday with even warmer readings to start our work week. Get the 7-Day forecast at www.fox17online.com/weather.
