KALAMAZOO, Mich. (March 11, 2014) —  Western Michigan University School of Medicine announced a new name for the school. It will be named after the late Homer Stryker. Family members of Homer Stryker donated more than $100 million dollars toward the initiative to establish the medical school in 2011.

Strykers’ granddaughter, Ronda Stryker and her husband, William Johnston, a WMU Trustee, are the donors. The donors remained anonymous until today.

It will be called the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, a school official  announced at a press conference.

The announcement follows a press release the school wrote leading up to this event.

Kalamazoo community officials will gather with WMU, Borgess Health and Bronson Healthcare leaders and community members Tuesday, March 11, to disclose a major new development for the WMU School of Medicine.

The event, which is both a news conference and a community celebration, will be held at 1:15 p.m. in Room 4010 of WMU’s College of Health and Human Services Building, which is located just west of Oakland Drive at the intersection of Oakland and Wheaton Street. The location is the same one used when University officials announced a $100 million anonymous gift nearly three years ago. That gift served as the foundation funding for development of the medical school that will welcome its first class in fall 2014.
