BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette made his first re-election campaign stop in West Michigan Tuesday, but he was met by protestors.

A group of demonstrators could be seen picketing the event at Lakeview Ford and Lincoln, 295 W. Dickman Rd., to protest Schuette’s stance against gay marriage. They were holding signs stating, “Equality for all.”

Inside the car dealership, Schuette announced his run for re-election.  It was the first stop of the day in West Michigan with another event scheduled in Grand Rapids.  His day of campaigning will culminate at the Kent County Republican Headquarters, 725 Lake Michigan Drive NW, at around 5 p.m.  Schuette campaigned across metro Detroit Monday.

On Friday, following more than a week-long trial, a federal judge in Detroit struck down the ban on gay marriage in Michigan.  That paved the way for four county clerks across the state – including in Muskegon – to open their doors Saturday to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Just hours later, Schuette filed a motion to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Cincinnati to issue a stay in the case.  The motion was granted until Wednesday.
