02-17-14 Manure spill operationHOPKINS, Mich. (March 27, 2014) — A health advisory to avoid contact with surface water downstream from a manure spill has been lifted by the Allegan County Health Department.

The ‘no contact’ advisory has been in effect since February 17.

A manure spill from a dairy operation near Bear Creek was first detected February 14 and stopped on February 15, but the watershed area feeds into Bear Creek, the Rabbit River, and eventually the Kalamazoo River. The health department advised against contact with surface water in that area and against fishing and recreational activities along the watershed to where the Rabbit River enters the Kalamazoo River at New Richmond.

Samples were taken March 24, and the advisories were lifted March 27.
