Alleged Grand Rapids Furniture Store Thief Arraigned

1405741GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 1, 2014) — The man accused of stealing a couch and returning less than a week later to steal matching cushions was arraigned Tuesday.

Michael McClerin, 41, is charged with felony receiving and concealing stolen property over $20,000, according to Lt. Patrick Merrill with Grand Rapids Police.

McClerin allegedly broke into Gorman’s Home Furnishings, 2320 28th Street SE, on both March 3 and March 9 and stole the couch and cushions, Merrill said.

Police also believe that McClerin broke into other home furnishing stores and took other high-end items, including a $5,000 mattress from The Mattress Store, 2733 28th St. SE.

Merrill said McClerin has stolen roughly $100,000 worth of items.

McClerin was arrested March 20 on an illegal weapons charge.  Merrill said officers found a receipt for a storage unit that contained stolen items, although the stolen couch and cushions were not among them.

He raised the $50,000 bond for the weapons charge on March 24 and was free until his arrest Monday, Merrill said.

He is now being held on a $500,000 bond.

His probable cause hearing on the stolen property charge is scheduled April 10.  He faces up to 20 years in prison because of prior convictions, Merrill said.
