PAW PAW, Mich. (April 2, 2014) — A group of residents in Paw Paw went through a training exercise to show the effects of impaired driving on Wednesday night.

The group attended the Van Buren Sheriff’s Department’s Civilian Academy.

To simulate drunk driving, everyone put on special glasses and rode on an obstacle course in a golf cart.

The group also used a computer program to simulate the effects of texting and driving.

The class is in it’s 15th week. The group consists of residents who said that they want to be more involved with their sheriff’s department and to be aware of the issues their local law enforcement faces.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said that in recent years, they’ve seen a rising trend of “drugged-driving.” The department said that whether it be cocaine, marijuana, or any other substance, it’s just as dangerous as drunk driving.
