KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Police believe a missing man may have fallen through the ice at a local lake.

At 10 a.m. Thursday, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety began investigating a missing person report after the wife of a 56-year-old man reported him missing after her husband didn’t return home from going to Asylum Lake to cross country ski, which he often did.

Members of Kalamazoo Public Safety, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, the Western Michigan University Police Department and Kalamazoo County Emergency Management responded to Asylum Lake to conduct an area search. A vehicle belonging to the man soon was located in an Asylum Lake parking area off of Parkview Drive.

Foot tracks were located leading out to the lake and onto the ice. Police said it’s believed that the man may have fallen into the lake.

The Kalamazoo County Dive Team was called to the scene to assess whether conditions existed for a dive search. Dive team members determined that, due to rain and shifting ice on the lake, a search was not possible or safe for divers.

A comprehensive ground search was conducted by officers and the man wasn’t located.

His name has not been released.

Police said no foul play is suspected.
