VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. – A Van Buren County teenager, who fell asleep at the wheel then crashed is expected to be okay, but has been cited by authorities.

That’s according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department which said the crash happened Thursday in the 86000 block M-40, Porter Township.

Deputies said the 18-year-old Lawton man was driving his 2007 Chrysler Pacifica when he fell asleep, crossed the center line, then barreled into a farm field.  He was in the field for about 100 yards and struck a farm post before returning to the road and crashing.

“The farm post, as pictured, penetrated the driver’s side of the windshield and stopped just inches from the driver’s body,” stated a sheriff’s department news release.

The man was taken to a Kalamazoo hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
