LIVONIA, Mich. — Getting to a Detroit Tigers game or anywhere in downtown Detroit will require a detour for any driver who normally uses I-96.

A seven-mile of I-96 will closed completely April 5 and will remain closed for rebuilding until October.

The $148 million project, dubbed by the Michigan Department of Transportation as the “96 Fix,” will affect the expressway between Newburgh Road just east of the I-275/I-96 interchange and US-24/Telegraph Road. That’s in the city of Livonia and Redford Township.

In addition to replacing pavement, some 37 bridges will be repaired and utility work will be extensive.

The freeway being replaced was built in the 1970s and has exceeded its useful lifetime, according to MDOT.

A number of detour routescan be used, but from West Michigan, the best, most direct route is to take I-696 and I-75 to and from downtown Detroit.

Drivers on I-94 from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek will not be affected by the I-96 closure.
