Have We Turned The Corner On Winter Yet?

WEST MICHIGAN (April 5, 2014) — The question asked in this headline is probably one everyone would love to know the answer to. We certainly have turned the corner on the worst part of winter, but to say it’s completely over can’t be accomplished with a simple yes or no.

That’s because we can (and often do) get some accumulating snow during April, and even some cold temperatures too. The reason I bring up this question is because our high temperatures over the next several days are consistently in the 40s and 50s…a change from what we’ve seen just a week or two ago. It seems the cold, well below normal temperatures may just be behind us. That said, the eight to 14 day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center is showing a 50 to 60 percent bull’s-eye possibility of below normal temperatures over the Great Lakes. See the map below.

As I was changing the oil on my SUV today, I couldn’t help but wonder if I could finally run the gas out of the snow blower and place it in to warm storage. Since we live in Michigan and we experienced everything EXCEPT a normal/average winter, I decided to give it a few more weeks. If this were early May I’d feel a little safer. Normal/average high temperatures for this time of year have us in the middle 50s.
