FOX 4 has confirmed a number of chimpanzees escaped their enclosure at the Kansas City Zoo on Thursday.

Zoo patrons said a woman alerted people who there were animals on the loose at which time people sought safety inside buildings. Around 5:30 zoo officials began to slowly let people leave.

One woman who was at the zoo under lockdown said zoo personnel said there were seven chimpanzees that were outside their enclosure, but that three had been captured.

Julie Neemeyer with the Zoo said officials said the zoo closes every day at 4 p.m. FOX 4 first learned of the chimpanzees around 4:30 p.m.
