NEWAYGO, Mich. (April 14, 2014) — The Red Cross of West Michigan is opening a Newaygo County shelter for those who have been affected by flooding.

They plan to have the shelter open by 5 p.m. Monday at the Resonant Church, 302 E 68th St.

“This shelter will help residents who have had to leave their homes because of rising waters by offering a safe and warm place to stay,” Red Cross said in a release.

Meals and snacks will also be provided courtesy of Salvation Army, the release said.

Newaygo County Emergency Services posted on its Facebook page Monday morning: “ALERT – ALL RESIDENCES LIVING ON THE MUSKEGON RIVER NEED TO PREPARE TO EVACUATE NOW. THE RIVER AT THE CROTON RIVER GAUGE IS at 11.39 feet (which is higher than last year) WE COULD SEE 12.4 feet or higher. PLEASE EVACUATE NOW.”

Safety tips from the Red Cross:

  • Go to a designated public shelter if you are forced to leave your residence due to flooding
  • Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.
  • Follow the instructions provided by local emergency workers. If you are asked to stay in your home, don’t try to leave. If you are not allowed to enter your neighborhood, please come to a Red Cross shelter until conditions are safe for you to return home.
  • During an emergency, letting your family know that you are safe can bring your loved ones great peace of mind.  If you are affected by the flood, register on the Red Cross Safe and Well Website.
  • Download the free Flood App from the American Red Cross. This is available on all Apple and Android devices and includes updated information on shelter locations and what to do before, during, and after a flood.
