WAYLAND, Mich. — (April 15, 2014) The Wayland Union School Board again took up discussions about Transportation Supervisor Jeff Schilthroat’s contract Monday night.

The board went into a closed session with attorneys during a portion of the public meeting April, 14.

Schilthroat’s job performance there has been under fire by some parents since an assault occurred on a school bus in early March.

Part of the focus has been on how he handled that situation.

The parent of the special needs child involved, Amber Canfield, felt that he purposely shut off a security video recording of the assault at a certain point so she couldn’t see what really happened to her child.

She was later allowed to watch the full video after she learned that there was more to it and requested to view it.

The portion she wasn’t able to view earlier showed more of the assault and the bus driver’s reaction.

The school board went into closed session Monday to again discuss the supervisor and the renewal of his contract with attorneys.

Also at the meeting, board members discussed the possibility of splitting the transportation supervisor position into two different positions, transportation supervisor and maintenance supervisor.

It would be part of a budget proposal that would provide an extra $20,000 towards that effort.

No decisions have been made on that proposal.

Two mothers who felt that Schilthroat had ignored their complaints involving the bus driver’s conduct were on hand at the meeting to voice concerns once again.

The bus driver and Schilthroat remain on leave.
