SAN ANTONIO (April 20, 2014) – A local soldier’s long road of recovery is inspiring people around the world.

Greenville High School alumnus Sgt. Cory Muzzy was seriously injured in a February training accident at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.

“I was ramming the round into the cannon tube, and that’s when the firing incident happened,” Muzzy said.  “No one knows what happened.”

After serving two tours overseas, it seemed Muzzy’s days of extreme danger were over. But his life is now forever changed.

His wife Michelle broke the news to him: Muzzy’s right leg was gone, his left foot was to be taken shortly after, and he was blind in both eyes.

“I knew what I was signing up for,” Muzzy said. “I wanted to serve my country, and I’ve done so.”

A Facebook page following Muzzy’s recovery progress has more than 1,500 “likes.”  People from all over are wearing “Team Muzzy” shirts, and a fundraising account has raised more than $20,000 to help in recovery and relocation expenses.

‘Without those people, we wouldn’t be where we are now, and I`m extremely grateful for everyone who has helped us,” Muzzy said.

Though it’s hard to imagine the recovery Muzzy faces, learning to do the simplest things in life again, he asks not for pity or condolences.

The soldier says he just wants people to look at him and be happy and grateful for what he’s done.

Muzzy says in the future he’ll be able to walk again and get some sight back, and that’s what he focuses on.

“Courage. Courage is one of the best Army values there are,” Muzzy said.
