GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 18, 2014) — Monday will be a busy day for road crews and a challenging one for some drivers.

New long-term projects will pop up on highways, county roads, and city streets.

US-31, Ottawa County:

  • 12 miles of US-31 southbound will be resurfaced between Ferris Street and Quincy Street. Expect lane closures from April 21 through mid-June. However, the Michigan Department of Transportation is making allowances for the morning commute: Both lanes will be open within the construction zone Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and on Sunday all day.

US-131, Mecosta County:

  • While work on the expressway began April 14, lane closures will begin April 21. The project includes resurfacing and some major bridge work, so expect slower traffic through October. Again, MDOT is allowing for the way the highway is used: two lanes will be kept open northbound on Fridays from noon to midnight, and two southbound lanes will be open on Sundays from noon to midnight.

M-82, Newaygo County:

  • Resurfacing work and reconstruction of a railroad crossing will lead to slower travel times between M-120 and Industrial Drive in Fremont. Eventually, detours. The project begins April 21 with crews working on the shoulders for a while. Then, flag crews will control traffic. In mid-June, traffic will be routed on a long detour on Stone Road and 24th Street around the project.

Monroe Avenue, Grand Rapids:

  • Major renovation of Monroe Avenue between Ann Street and North Park Street begins April 21. The work will be done in three phases, with only local traffic permitted most of the time. The first phase will affect Monroe Avenue between Ann Street and Guild Street, which is where the main entrance is located for Riverside Park. Eventually, roundabouts will be built at Guild Street, Knapp Street, 3 Mile, and North Park Street. The project runs through September 18.

96th Avenue, Zeeland:

  • Resurfacing and reconstruction of curbs and ramps will begin on 96th Avenue at Riley Street will likely lead to delays around Zeeland East High School. Riley Street will be closed, while 96th Avenue will remain open. The construction will continue through June 6 and be confined to 96th Avenue in the intersection and north and south of the intersection.

N Avenue, Kalamazoo County:

  • N Avenue will be widened and resurfaced between 26th Street and 34th Street, with the project ending sometime in July.
