HASTINGS, Mich. (April 25, 2014) — For the second year in a row, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Hastings spent hours knitting and it’s turning a few heads. The group calls it a “yarn bomb”, and it covers several trees and poles in downtown Hastings.

“Kind of look and wonder what’s going on. Of course we have our sign here, so hopefully they will stop and maybe inquire or read the sign at least,” said club vice president, Kathy Lavictor.

“We started it last year in honor of our 120th anniversary and we decided that we’d so it again this year. For one it’s a lot of fun, our club members do the crocheting and knitting and then we get together and yarn bomb the trees and the poles in front of the library here,” said club president, Sharon Russell.

The Hastings women’s group began all the way back in 1893. That’s when a group of woman raised funds to open the city’s first public library.

“It’s a long legacy and we certainly have much to live up to. They’ve been instrumental in the library, founding our library way back in the 1800’s, and we want to continue to do community service,” said Lavictor.

The group helps raise money for the local woman’s shelter and members volunteer their time to the head start program…

“It means a lot. That’s kind of our commitment to our community here in Hastings and there is always a need,” said Russell.
