WYOMING, Mich. (April 25, 2014) — Godfrey-Lee Public Schools announced that Lee Middle & High School closed on Friday due to illness.

We spoke with school officials, who said enough students and staff had fallen ill that the decision was made to close for the day.  That decision came at about 7:40 a.m.

Brian Hartl with the Kent County Health Department suspects it is Norovrius. He says it was likely caused by a student who vomited in the hallway on Wednesday.

Hartl says despite it being cleaned up sometimes in these situations the virus can float around and get on different surfaces.

Being that the Norovirus is so highly contagious Hartl says it doesn’t take a lot for the illness to spread.

In fact during March they had a high evaluation of gastrointestinal illness throughout Kent County and unlike the flu that has peak months, the Norovirus can strike at any time.

There will be a thorough cleaning at the school throughout the weekend and officials are planning to be back in operation by Monday.

The district will keep parents and students updated with posts on its Facebook page.
