VATICAN CITY STATE, FOX NEWS (April 27, 2014) – Pope Francis led the first canonization ceremony to name two Pontiffs as Saint Sunday. This is the historic double canonization of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. Officials expected one million people in attendance on this historic day. Along with Pope Francis, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI also was present for the ceremony.

Catholics from around the world gathered in Rome to witness this papal ceremony. Pilgrims include a group of members from the Blessed John Paul II Parish in Cedar Springs. This group flew to Vatican City on Easter Sunday, eager to experience first-hand the double canonization ceremony, as their parish will become Saint John Paul II Parish.

Pope John Paul II is remembered as the wildly popular Pope during his nearly 27 years as Pontiff. Then Pope John XXIII is known as “Good Pope John,” a church reformer who brought in the Second Vatican Council.
