NEW YORK (April 29, 2014) — National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver today announced that the league is banning Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for life and issuing a $2.5 million fine.

The fine is the most the NBA can apply according to its by-laws.

Silver also requested that the NBA Board of Directors do everything in its power to force Sterling to sell the Clippers. That type of action will require a three-quarters majority of the current NBA owners.

At a press conference Wednesday, Silver confirmed that the NBA’s investigation verified that it was Sterling’s voice on an audio recording making derogatory racist comments.

That audio recording was first released by TMZ Sports on Friday.
