GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (April 30, 2014) — It’s almost May, and here is a look at the normal weather for the month, as well as some of the records that exist.

TEMPERATURES: Normal highs in May rise from 65 degrees on the 1st to 74 by the 31st. Normal lows rise from 43 to 53. The record high for May is 98 degrees, set on the 30th in 1895. The record low is 21, set on the 1st in 1903.

PRECIPITATION: There is normally 3.98″ of rainfall in May. The wettest May was in 2001, when 10.01″ fell, and the driest was in 1936, when Grand Rapids had only 0.36″.

SNOWFALL: There is normally just a trace of snow in May. The snowiest May on record was in 1923 and 1902, when the total was 5.5″.

LENGTH OF DAYLIGHT: Here is a look at the sunrise/sunset times, as well as the length of daylight:

  • 1st:  Sunrise 6:37am,  sunset 8:44pm,  length of daylight 14 hours and 7 minutes.
  • 31st: Sunrise 6:07am,  sunset 9:14pm,  length of daylight 15 hours and 7 minutes.

The length of daylight increases by one hour in May.
