Recall Roundup: IKEA Wall-Mounted Lights and GE Dehumidifiers

consumer alertBETHESDA, Md. (April 30, 2014) — IKEA has re-announced and expanded a current recall of children’s wall-mounted lights, and there are two other recalls of note in this week’s Recall Roundup.

The IKEA recall recall involves IKEA children’s wall-mounted lamps sold in various style names, shapes and colors.  There are also GE Dehumidifiers sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, and Vibe USB Mobile Power Bars sold exclusively at Five Below stores.  Information on each recall is included below.

IKEA Wall-Mounted Lamp Recall

IKEA Children’s wall-mounted lamps — Children can get entangled in the electrical cord that hangs from the children’s wall-mounted lamps, posing a strangulation hazard.  About 3.5 million units are impacted in the United States, 1.4 million in Canada, 30.2 million worldwide (This re-announcement includes IKEA children’s lamps in the firm’s previous recall in December 2013 and expands the number and types of lamps.)  A 15-month-old baby became entangled in the TASSA NATT lamp’s cord and nearly strangled. This incident, and the death of a 16-month-old baby who died after getting entangled in the SMILA lamp’s cord, were reported in the previous recall.  Free repairs are available.  Click here for more information on this recall.

GE Dehumidifier Recall

GE Brand Dehumidifiers — A component in the dehumidifier’s compressor can short circuit, posing a fire hazard.  About 15,500 units are impacted in this recall.  They were sold at Walmart stores nationwide from March 2010 to December 2010 for about $170.  Free repairs are available.  Click here for more information on this recall.

Vibe Charger Recall

Vibe USB Mobile Power Bar — The power bar can overheat, posing a fire hazard.  About 99,000 units are impacted by this recall.  This recall involves Vibe USB mobile power bars also known as portable USB power supply or portable chargers.  There have been six reports of incidents involving melted parts, smoking, leaking batteries and fire resulting in reports of bursting power bars and minor property damage.
