ORLEANS TWP, Mich. (May 5, 2014) – Police processed the field for hours where they say Steve Goble, 31, died in an exchange of gunfire.

It’s still unknown if the fatal shots were self-inflicted.  Leonard Guernsey says he witnessed the whole thing.

“The police stopped by and told us to go inside and lock the doors,” Guernsey said.

Police told him Goble intended to commit suicide by cop.

Earlier police say Goble led them on a high-speed chase in a RSS Mobile Trailer Repair Truck.  Our calls to that company were not returned.

“We heard him tell him to drop the gun, put his hands up,” Guernsey said.

But police say Goble aimed the gun at them and shot.

“We heard the shots fired and it was the guy shooting at the cops and then the cops returned fire,” Guernsey said.

He says he then saw Goble fall.

Goble’s criminal history includes a guilty plea to an April 24th misdemeanor for attempting to interfere with electronic communications.

Sunday’s incident wasn’t the first time Goble tried getting away from authorities.  In 2005, he pled guilty to operating while intoxicated and fleeing and eluding police.

Prior to that, he pled guilty to possession of alcohol as a minor in 2002.

Neighbors of Goble and his wife in Lake Odessa say there had been domestic issues at their home before.

They also say Goble had domestic issues with his former girlfriend where police were called several times.

An autopsy was done on Goble Monday, those results have not yet been released.
