NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. (May 9, 2014) — There are new details in the case involving the stabbing death of Charles Rainey III.

Earlier this week, the sister of Charles Rainey III spoke with FOX 17 about his untimely death at the hands of the woman who admitted to stabbing him.

“I miss his smile his laugh my brother was the most fun loving person,” Cristal Kooiker, his sister said.

“My brother made the ultimate sacrifice for loving the wrong girl,” Kookier said.

A kitchen knife went through his heart and his girlfriend, Tricia Hill, told FOX 17 she stabbed Rainey out of self defense.

The detective on the case, Adam Mercer told FOX 17 earlier, “I know a lot of people waiting in suspense i imagine family and community members when that’s going to happen.”

It took three days to make the arrest and charge Hill with second degree murder.

Now Mercer is saying he believes the stabbing was fueled by anger. During Thursday’s probable cause hearing, detective Mercer said Tricia Hill had ample opportunities to call the police and/or leave the home.

According to the detective, Hill told police that she, Rainey, and their roommate, Charles Anderson, had been smoking marijuana and drinking that night.

Hill told police that she and Rainey had been arguing and fought throughout the evening in multiple rooms. Hill allegedly slapped Rainey on more than one occasion that evening, and Rainey is said to have assaulted her.

At one point, Rainey’s back was towards Hill. When he turned around, Hill stabbed Rainey in the chest with a kitchen knife through the heart.

“It was one of two options my brother would end up dead or in prison and the worst outcome came out of it my brother ended up dead,” Kooiker said.

The detective said Hill’s 6-year-old daughter was also home at the time. Hill is due back in court later this mont
