berrien co sheriffNEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (May 11, 2014) — Two 14-year-old girls are safe Sunday after their raft drifted out into Lake Michigan.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, the girls fell asleep while sunbathing near Camp Sokol and their raft was carried roughly 300 yards off shore.

The girls did not have life jackets or paddles, a release said.  They used a cellphone to contact their parents, who in turn called 911.

The U.S. Coast Guard, New Buffalo Township Fire Department and a water rescue team from the Chikaming Township Fire Department also responded, according to the sheriff’s department.

A private fishing boat spotted the girls and stayed with them until a water rescue boat arrived.  The girls were taken back to shore and were unharmed.
