HOLLAND, Mich. — Drivers along I-196 in Holland south of the Allegan County line have been seeing surveyors along the highway. This week, the heavy work begins.

Construction of crossover lanes begins right away, and after concrete barriers are installed, all traffic on I-196 will be in one lane in each direction on the westbound lanes between the Ottawa/Allegan county line and US-31. The eastbound pavement will be torn up and replaced.

In addition, work will be done on the ramps at the M-40 interchange. A new ramp will be built that will loop from southbound M-40 to eastbound I-196. Currently, southbound traffic must wait for northbound traffic to pass before getting onto eastbound I-196. This is intended to cut down on morning and afternoon congestion on M-40.
