Latest discussion from the Storm Prediction Center. It’s a little technical so read it slowly.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0587

   AREAS AFFECTED...SRN LWR MI

   CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 151...

   VALID 122044Z - 122145Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 151
   CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...STRONG TSTMS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST ACROSS SRN LWR MI.
MAIN THREATS WILL BE SVR HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. HOWEVER...A
NON-ZERO TORNADO THREAT EXISTS NEAR THE WARM FRONT WHERE LOW-LEVEL
   SHEAR AND VORTICITY ARE ENHANCED.

DISCUSSION...RECENT SURFACE ANALYSIS PLACES A WARM FROM MKG SEWD TO
JUST N OF TTF. TSTM ACTIVITY ALONG THIS BOUNDARY IN LIVINGSTON AND
WASHTENAW COUNTIES HAS SHOWN TRANSIENT LOW-LEVEL ROTATION AS
ENHANCED LOW-LEVEL SHEAR AND VORTICITY ALONG IT CONTRIBUTE TO A
LOCALIZED TORNADO THREAT. THIS LOCALIZED THREAT ALONG THE BOUNDARY
WILL PERSIST AS STORMS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP IN THE WARM SECTOR AND
   MOVE NEWD TOWARDS THE BOUNDARY.

UNCERTAINTY IS HIGH BUT THERE IS AT LEAST SOME POTENTIAL FOR AN
INCREASE IN DAMAGING WINDS WITH THE CONVECTION ACROSS S-CNTRL LWR MI
AS FORWARD-PROPAGATION INCREASES AS A RESULT OF CELL INTERACTIONS.

Storm Prediction Center (SPC) afternoon discussion regarding the Great Lakes. …UPPER GREAT LAKES INTO MIDWEST/OH VALLEY THIS
AFTERNOON/EVENING…

MULTIPLE CLUSTERS OF TSTMS ARE ONGOING AS OF MID MORNING FROM ERN IA
INTO WI/LOWER MI/OH…AIDED BY CONVECTIVELY GENERATED VORTICITY
MAXIMA AND A BROAD ZONE OF WAA WITHIN THE EXIT REGION OF A NOCTURNAL
LLJ. A SUBSET OF THESE EARLY-DAY STORMS WILL LIKELY CONTINUE INTO
AFTERNOON WITH ADDITIONAL STORMS FORMING ALONG THE SYNOPTIC COLD
FRONT AND RESIDUAL OUTFLOW BOUNDARIES. 12Z OBSERVED SOUNDINGS
INDICATE THAT THE WARM SECTOR AIR MASS HAS BECOME QUITE MOIST WITH
LOWEST 100-MB MEAN-MIXING RATIOS AS HIGH AS 13-14 G/KG. THIS
MOISTURE WILL COMBINE WITH DAYTIME HEATING AND STEEPENING MIDLEVEL
LAPSE RATES TO YIELD AFTERNOON MLCAPE VALUES APPROACHING 1500-2500
J/KG.

THE STRONGEST VERTICAL SHEAR WILL RESIDE ACROSS MN/IA INTO WI/NRN IL
WHERE A NWD-MIGRATING 30-40 KT SLY LLJ WILL ALIGN WITH THE MIDLEVEL
JET STREAK PROGRESSING NEWD FROM THE CNTRL PLAINS. WHERE STRONGER
HEATING/DESTABILIZATION CAN OCCUR…THE ENVIRONMENT WILL SUPPORT
BOWING AND SUPERCELL STRUCTURES WITH A RISK FOR DAMAGING
WINDS…LARGE HAIL AND PERHAPS A COUPLE OF TORNADOES.

FARTHER TO THE E INTO LOWER MI AND THE OH VALLEY…VERTICAL SHEAR
WILL DECREASE OWING TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE MIDLEVEL RIDGE AXIS.
HOWEVER…GIVEN AT LEAST MODESTLY STRONG DEEP SWLY FLOW AND THE
POTENTIAL FOR MODERATE AFTERNOON INSTABILITY…SOME ORGANIZED LINE
SEGMENTS AND/OR MULTICELL CLUSTERS APPEARS POSSIBLE WITH DAMAGING
WINDS AND LARGE HAIL BEING THE PRIMARY HAZARDS.

Here’s a look at the current radar. Still monitoring the line of storms moving across Lake Michigan,

OK, Rick is here to take over. I’ll still chime in if I see anything interesting this afternoon! Stay safe, and have a good day!

Jon Shaner May 12, 201412:55 PM

Most areas drying out west of U.S. 131. Should be more of a break until the line in Wisconsin gets here around mid-afternoon.  Still no reports of anything noteworthy.

Jon Shaner May 12, 201412:42 PM

Still some breaks in the clouds over the lake.. enough energy still around even behind this line of storms that we’ll have to watch the stuff back in Wisconsin.  http://tribwxmi.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/michigan_vis.gif?w=640

Jon Shaner May 12, 201412:29 PM

Most interesting storm now is this one between Wayland & Caledonia. Increasing likelihood of some hail in there.

Jon Shaner May 12, 201412:18 PM

New SPC outlook: no real changes.  Overall threat of organized severe weather relatively low… will be watching more for isolated cells with localized wind/hail potential.

New severe weather outlook from the Storm Prediction Center should come out in next half-hour… will be interested to see if there are any changes. Link: http://www.spc.noaa.gov/

Radar just before noon. Watching the broken line from north of GR down toward South Bend… expect it will continue to grow. Lack of organization suggests bigger hail than wind threat for now. -Jon
