IONIA COUNTY, Mich (May 22, 2014) – An inmate serving time for a second-degree murder conviction attempted to escape a prison facility in Ionia County on Wednesday.
20-year-old Marc Leverette of Flint had just been transferred to the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility on Tuesday after staying at the Woodland Center Correctional Facility in Livingston County. The Woodland Center is a mental-health site for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
A spokesperson for the MDOC tells FOX17 Leverette rushed a fence around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday trying to escape. The escape attempt set off motion sensors, prompting a response from an armed officer in a vehicle on the perimeter of the facility.
The armed guard was able to detain Leverette after he suffered cuts to his head and arms from wire on the interior fence before he could reach the top. Leverette was returned to the mental-health facility shortly after the escape attempt.
