SHOOTING DOG

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich (May 23, 2014) – A 5-month-old child was rushed to the hospital late Friday evening in Grand Rapids after being attacked by a dog that was later shot and killed by police.

The incident happened just after 10:00 p.m. in the 500 block of Diamond Avenue SE.  Officers were called to a home after getting reports a pit bull was attacking children.

Authorities with Grand Rapids Police say officers arrived to find everyone outside of the home, including the injured 5-month-old child.  The child suffered eye and lip injuries according to police, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The child’s condition isn’t immediately known.

Officers remained on scene to try to catch the dog using a snare and fire extinguisher, but ended up putting the dog down because they couldn’t catch it safely.

Grand Rapids Police say the dog was reportedly owned by the family living at the home.
