FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich (May 26, 2014) – A male home invasion suspect is in custody after a foot chase that crossed a Muskegon County highway on Memorial Day.
Investigators with the Fruitport Township Police Department say the suspect was seen trying to break into a home in the 2300 block of East Broadway Avenue just before 11:00 a.m.
A resident at the home spotted the male suspect at a back slider door after the family dog woke them up. The resident watched the suspect go around and try to enter the home through an unlocked door. The resident then confronted the male suspect, who they didn’t recognize, who ran from the home.
Officers with the Muskegon Heights Police Department and Norton Shores Police Department joined the search after a suspect description was obtained.
The suspect was later spotted by a Norton Shores officer crossing U.S. 31 running into a wooded area where he was taken into custody.
Investigators say the suspect was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail, and was currently on parole for prior home invasion convictions.
A bag containing valuables was also recovered during the arrest. Right now, police are trying to determine if those items were taken during separate criminal acts after receiving several complaints of items being stolen from unlocked vehicles in the Cloverville area in Fruitport Township.
Right now, no official link has been made between the crimes.
Police say they’re working to contact residents that may be involved that are currently out-of-town for the holiday weekend.
The suspect’s name that was arrested hasn’t been released, pending arraignment.
