GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (May 28, 2014) — Grand Rapids Police Captain Daniel Savage has been named Interim Police Chief by City Manager Gregory Sundstrom.

According to a release, the appointment takes effect at 5 p.m. May 30.  Savage will remain until a new chief is employed by the city.

Capt. Savage began his career with GRPD as an officer and investigator in 1985 after being employed by Kent County, Allegan County, Battle Creek and East Lansing.   He became a police captain in 2011.

“Dan is a seasoned professional who has earned the respect of the department and his peers. I have the utmost confidence in Captain Savage that he can lead the men and women of the Grand Rapids Police Department during this transitional time,” Sundstrom said in a release.

Chief Kevin Belk announced in January that he was retiring.  His last official day on the job was Feb. 7, but he served as transitional chief until a replacement was located.
