DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK, June 1, 2014) –A neighbor walked into a garage on Pilgrim Street at Freeland Street in northwest Detroit and says an odor made him freeze in his tracks.

“Smelled like a dead rat – a smell you don’t want to smell, like something dead. Real dead,” says Terrence Hayes.

When his eyes adjusted to the very limited light inside the garage he saw two containers and body parts.

“I just saw the foot and then that’s it,” he remembers.

When police went inside the garage they discovered the mutilated body of an adult. A foot and a portion of the victim’s head were visible. The remains of the body parts were all encased in cement.

“It was like a plastic container, blue, that had two clips on it to prop them open and duct tape wrapped around it so it can seal it,” says Hayes.

With no identification, for now the body is a John Doe. They believe it’s a man but won’t know for certain until the cement is separated from the encased body parts.

“We went inside the garage and observed two containers filled with cement and what we believe to be a mutilated body,” says Detroit Police Capt. Anthony Topp.

Investigators estimate the body parts have been here approximately five to six days.
