MUSKEGON, Mich. (June 6, 2014) — A biologist with the Michigan DNR and a Consumers Energy environmental expert climbed up 200 feet at the B.C. Cobb Plant on Thursday, for the annual banding of falcon chicks.
There were three this year, and each one is believed to be 20 days old. There is one male chick, and two female chicks.
Environmental Coordinator Rick DuPuis MDNR Biologist Nik Kalejs climbed to the 200-foot level of the plant’s 650-foot stack to collect the chicks.
In addition to this week’s work at Cobb, Kalejs and J.H. Campbell Generating Complex employees banded four female chicks, about 32 days old, on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.
“With Thursday’s work at the Cobb Plant, we have now banded 38 peregrine chicks since 2005 and have documented 44 chicks hatched at this site since 2003,” said Roger Mortenstern, the Senior Public Information Director for Consumers Energy. “Peregrine falcons are a federally threatened species and remain endangered in Michigan.”
