HOLLAND, Mich. (June 13, 2014) — The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to proceed in the next couple of weeks with what it calls “temporary repair” on the bridge that carries US-31 over Washington Avenue.

The bridge was damaged when a truck boom hit the bridge after the driver forgot to lower the boom after dropping off a load. The boom struck the support beams of the bridge, and MDOT estimated eventual repairs could cost as much as $400,000.

The left lane of southbound US-31 will continue to be closed until after the temporary repairs, and then both lanes will be allowed to be open until a permanent repair is accomplished. The left lane of westbound Washington Avenue directly under the point of impact will be closed until the temporary repair is complete.
