KALAMAZOO, Mich. (June 14, 2014) – A two-alarm fire broke out at the Republic Waste Services trash and recycling center partially collapsing its roof, according to Kalamazoo Fire and Rescue authorities.

Officials told Fox 17 News the blaze started around 4 A.M. in the large shed used for trash storage, located on the 3400 block of Gembrit Circle. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety closed Cork Street to traffic between Emerald and Sprinkle. Heavy smoke could be seen from at least a half mile away on I-94.

Crews used the fire hydrant on Cork Street near Emerald, causing a challenge for firefighters to run the fire hose several thousand yards to the fire.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
