GRANDVILLE, Mich. (June 23, 2014) — Shawn Jarrett, 50, was arraigned today on charges of first degree home invasion and criminal sexual conduct.

He’s accused of forcing his way into a Grandville home on Prairie Street Southwest and sexually assaulting an elderly woman. He’s also accused of stealing some cash before riding away on a bike. Grandville police chief Dan Steere said this happened Thursday. Jarrett was arrested on Friday.

Steere said witness accounts and help from other local law enforcement agencies were crucial in capturing Jarrett. Steere said Walker Police told Grandville Police to take a look at Jarrett, and Grand Rapids police served a search warrant. Jarrett was picked up in the Grand Rapids area.

Jarrett is a convicted murderer who was released from prison in 1982. He was behind bars for killing his 64-year-old neighbor.

During Monday’s arraignment, the 59th District Court judge asked Jarrett if he had any questions. Jarrett replied, “Yea, is this the end of this? How are you just going to sentence me or tell me I did this?”

Jarrett continued, “You didn’t even ask me where I was at…”

The judge said, “Mr. Jarrett, my purpose now is not to tell you, and to, uh, [not] be involved as an attorney.” He advised Jarrett to hire an attorney.
